A region of excellence
The Charente, a small region of France located on the western edge of Europe, is the world’s 8th biggest producer of spirits, the 2nd in Europe, and the number 1 in France. Over the centuries, the region gradually unfolded along the Charente River. It is commonly known as “the valley of spirits”, between the city of Angouleme and the Atlantic Ocean.
Supported by some 75,000 hectares of local vineyards producing acidic and relatively low-alcohol white wines that are particularly suitable for distillation and ageing, this region has developed its incomparable know-how over more than 450 years, know-how that has become the envy of the entire world.
In addition to its world famous cognac, the multiple skills and knowledge that were acquired thanks to the expansion of the most prestigious Eau-de-Vie in the world have also resulted in the local production of brandy, both bottled and bulk, as well as the production of great liqueurs, and more recently a range of premium vodkas.
This “valley of spirits” produces more than 25% of all French production, totalling almost 200 million bottles, the equivalent of 50% of all French exports. It also occupies the number 1 spot in terms of added value, having the best “premiumisation” of the entire market thanks to the extremely high quality of its spirits and its packaging.
Over the course of many centuries an entire technological chain has developed along the Charente River to accompany this growth. This technological chain includes everything from the production of agricultural machinery for the growing of the vines through to the prestigious creation and design workshops, and not forgetting the manufacture of the stills, cooperage, vat making, the glass industry, printing and cardboard manufacturing.
High-performance COFRAC accredited laboratories regularly test and accompany the creations and production of the Cellar Masters, and thus meet the exacting requirements of the importing countries. Furthermore, in order to perfect the training and education of the industry’s managers, a university branch specifically devoted to the production of spirits has been created in Segonzac at the heart of the vineyards. All of these tools contribute to the incredible rise of the Charente spirit-producing industry.
